Why a Degree Apprenticeship?

"I finished college and I always saw myself going to uni, but then as that got closer, I realised that I kind of felt like it just wasn't really the right path for me."

We caught up with recently graduated Alumni, Trya Hurley, Business Development Specialist at Hyster-Yale Group about her experience of the Level 6 B2B Sales Degree Apprenticeship.

Why a Degree Apprenticeship? : What made you embark on this journey?

"I kind of fell into sales. I never really saw myself selling forklift trucks. I did not stay up at night thinking, how can I be a forklift truck salesperson? It was more the fact that I liked the idea of apprenticeships.

I finished college and I always saw myself going to uni, but then as that got closer, I realised that. I kind of felt like it just wasn't really the right path for me. There wasn't exactly anything at the end of it. For me, that was certain and I didn't want to go to university and run the risk of being just as clueless then as I was now.

So when the opportunity to do a Level 6  Apprenticeship came up for a multinational organisation, I wanted to work in an organisation like this at the end of my degree, it just seemed perfect to be able to learn a real trade and skills, and also get the practical experience at the same time.

This was so perfect for me, so I chose to do this."

Tyra's Experience : What was your favourite part of the programme?

"I really enjoy doing the fun end-of-year projects because I had so much freedom with them and.

The way I understood the brief was to just do a project that helps you out at work. So doing the three of those also being in three different job roles, really helped me do those roles the best that I could.

Actually having that 20% of the time dedicated to researching what you're doing and thinking about how you can do it better was really helpful.

Year on year it made a significant impact on what I was doing."

Completing the journey : How did you feel after finishing the programme?

"Really good. I'm really glad that it's all done. Not just because I don't have to do any of that work anymore, but because I do feel like I've accomplished something and it's a really good feeling, knowing that you've completed all this work that you set out to do.

And because it's so personal and personalized, you do feel like you've learned a lot and that you've achieved a lot, rather than just being told to learn a certain syllabus and then completing it, like none of that's yours.

It's a really good feeling. And now I get to go into the same company, which I really like so, it's good to not have any awkward transition."
